On a fall 2008 excursion to Sonoma, Norma and I found a classy new entrant on the Russian River pinot noir scene, Lynmar Estate Winery.  The winery tasting/publicity manager was very helpful in steering me to delicious selections. A few sips was all it took – we joined their wine club on the spot and have cherished every shipment since then.  Their 2006 Russian River Valley pinot noir ($40) opens with red berry aromas, followed by dark fruit and mineral flavors.  There’s a zippy finish almost like a zinfandel.  We recently received a shipment of  the 2007 Jenkins pinot noir which was even better.

What better excuse for a three-day crawl through Sonoma on July 20 – 24 than to observe our four-year wedding anniversary and to continue our search for the perfect pinot noir? Our wanderlust took us to several wineries that were new to us. The wineries we liked best among all the ones we visited included the Hartford Family Winery, Zichichi Family Vineyard and Winery, Stryker Sonoma Winery and Vineyards, Acorn Winery, Selby Winery, and Copain Wines.

Relax — this isn’t a “I got it and you can’t have it” message.  Consider it a recommendation for wine clubs and for Steve Kent in particular if you like big cabs.
